The Wake of Water update in Enshrouded gives players a lot more freedom with base building, especially now that water actually has water-like physics. With this update, two of the coolest things you can make are fountains and water elevators. Neither one is complicated once you understand what the game is doing behind the scenes, but the game falls short on explaining the mechanics. Here’s what actually matters when trying to build them.

How Fountains Work

Everything starts with the Water Dispenser spout. Think of it as an endless hose that keeps pouring water until the surrounding water level matches the height of the spout. If the spout ever gets covered, it shuts off. So the entire design revolves around keeping it uncovered while still letting water fall. Keeping your spout uncovered is key.

A few basic things to remember:

  • Water only wants to move downward (like actual gravity).
  • Don’t let the Water Dispenser spout sit underwater.
  • Leave a block of empty space underneath the spout.
  • Give the water a direction to flow.

To build a clean, functional fountain:

  • Place a water spout facing downward with a one-block air gap beneath it. You can place a block around it to ensure water does not rise high enough to touch the Water Dispenser.
  • Build a basin at least two blocks tall around the landing zone. Water often rises over a one-block wall.
  • Install drains along the basin walls at your desired water height.
    • Small basins require more drains to keep up with the flow.
    • Large basins need fewer because water disperses more slowly.

Why these steps?

Building a fountain is mostly about shaping the area underneath it. I think you’ll have the best luck making the catch basin at least two blocks tall. A single block wall is almost always too short, and the water will climb right over it unless you install drains.

Drains are what actually keep the water level where you want it. You can place them at the height you want the water to stop. Smaller basins tend to need more drains, while larger ones can get away with just one or two because the water spreads out more slowly.

If you end up with water heading somewhere you didn’t intend, the pump tool is basically your eraser. It lets you scoop up and replace water so you can fix mistakes quickly. The Wake of Water update allows for easy fixes of mistakes.

How Water Elevators Work

One of the most impressive new builds in the update is the water elevator. It’s a vertical or horizontal travel tube filled entirely with water, sealed by water doors. Since water doors prevent flow in or out, you can fill an enclosed shaft and use swimming movement to travel in any direction.

This method works because water remains in place once an area is filled, even if you remove the spout afterward.

How to Build a Water Elevator

  1. Dig or build your elevator shaft to the height you want.
  2. Seal the front with a water door to keep water inside.
  3. Place a water spout inside the bottom of the shaft, but halfway up the initial fill zone.
  4. The water should rise until it reaches the spout. But do not have the spout covered.
  5. Remove the spout, move it higher, and repeat the process.
  6. Continue until the shaft is completely filled from bottom to top.
  7. Remove the spout when finished. The water will stay perfectly contained.

Because water is fully contained by the doors, you never risk flooding your base or losing water pressure.

This is what it should look like, fully finished and functional.

Using this method, you can build some different things at your base:

  • Vertical elevators
  • Underwater hallways
  • Horizontal travel tubes
  • Hidden base entrances

These add a new creative element to your base.

Final Thoughts

In the Wake of Water update in Enshrouded, the new water tools allow for your creativity to run wild. Fountains and elevators do require some finesse and care to get them running properly. But once you understand how water behaves and how spouts, drains, and water doors interact, you can incorporate these builds into any style of base.
