Dynasty Warriors: Origins – How Do You Save Xun You?

Should you bother going for Xun You or not? (Yes, you probably should)

Dynasty Warriors: Origins lets us play as a sort of self-insert character (kinda) rather than having us switch around different iconic figures in the franchise. There are a lot of easy to miss moments involving various characters in the game, ranging from minor optional stuff to choices that alter the course of history. In this guide, we will just go over why you should free Xun You in that one mission.

How Do You Save Xun You?

During the Assassination of Dong Zhuo mission, you can go off the beaten path somewhat and save Xun You from the jails. This is not required, but if you are trying to uncover all of the minor bits of content that you can potentially miss in the game, this is something that you should at least try.

Basically, all you need to do is head to the highlighted part of the map image below. There, you will find the jail cells where Xun You and other soldiers are being held captive. Getting there is not the easiest thing to do, however.

When the battle starts, Lu Bu will immediately show up. You do not have to fight him. In fact, you are encouraged to run away, so go ahead and do that unless you are on a post game run and are comfortable fighting this formidable foe. As the old saying goes: “Do not pursue Lu Bu!”

If you beat him, the mission will become significantly easier, but the safe option is to just simply book it as soon as it starts. Head to the east part of the map, where you will find the treasure room guarded by Dong Min. Defeat him so you can proceed.

In this room, you will find a secret passage leading to the jails. Cao Cao will point this out to you, so just open the large ornate door in one corner to completely skip all of the enemies on the other side of the map.

Before you proceed to the escape point marked in the map, take a short detour south. Again, Cao Cao will actually hint to this easy to miss bit by telling you that the nearby prison might be useful. Fight the enemies outside and go to the prison, which will trigger a cutscene with Xun You.

Defeat another officer guarding the prison itself and Xun You’s cell should open automatically in another cutscene that will play out. After thanking you for your assistance, he will push out and distract the enemies, making the rest of your escape much easier.

With this optional bit out of the way, your path to escape with Cao Cao should now have significantly less resistance. However, be wary of Lu Bu. If you did not take him out at the start, he will have probably caught up to you by now.

By the time you make it to the escape route, Xun You and his forces will likely have pushed up to that point as well, helping clear out the rest of the rabble in the final area. That should mark the end of the mission!

That is all there is to it. Saving Xun You is incredibly simple and should be something that you will do by default anyway, assuming that you pay attention to and follow what Cao Cao says throughout the mission.
