Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, just like the game that came before it, has a combat system that newcomers are going to have a tough time getting into. If you are largely unfamiliar with how it works, this guide will try to help you get started and hopefully allow you to get through your next few duels with ease.

Combat Guide

In the village of Troskowitz, a woman who calls out to you will give you a quest called Combat Training that will lead you to an NPC known as Tomcat. He is found at the Nomads’ Camp to the west of the village, conveniently right beside the combat arena.

Upon talking to him, he can teach you more combat techniques that you might want to know. If you manage to beat him, he will even teach you the master strike technique. If you lose, you can continue practicing with him until you believe that you are ready to beat him.

The Combat Training side quest in general teaches you how to do natural combos, horizontal slices, and more. The master strike is the most important thing you will learn here, and it is only doable with a sword. It is basically a well-timed counter attack without blocking.

This is the equivalent of sparring and learning more stuff with Captain Bernard in the first game. At the start of the game, you also undergo training through a friendly duel with Hans Capon, so you should already be armed with the basics of how combat works anyway.

Some Combat Tips

Once you get the basics down, the following list is a few tips that you can follow to hopefully improve your performance in battle. Some of these are covered in the tutorial of the game, but just in case you need a refresher, here you are:

  • Don’t just spam attacks and combos randomly, as you will quickly drain your stamina. Depending on your stats and what weapons you are using, this can potentially go down much faster.
  • Practice feinting and parrying! Instead of trying to barrage enemies, chip away at their health by feinting one way and immediately poking from the opposite direction.
  • A perfect block / parry is done by timing your block when the green shield on the reticle shows up, and this does not cost stamina. Immediately following it up with a strike is called a riposte / counter attack.
  • Master the master strike. This will take a bit of practice, but once Tomcat teaches you how to do it, get used to the timing for it. This will carry you far into the game, as it is essentially a free counter attack and is really effective against more skilled opponents.
  • Patience is the key. This is especially true against tougher enemies, as they will be good at defending.

That should be enough to get you started with the game’s combat, assuming you are still a bit lost after the introductory duel with Hans. Simply put, Master Tomcat can train you in various other fighting styles (polearms, heavy weapons, and unarmed), as long as you have the money to pay him.

If he’s not busy working or writing on his personal blog, there’s also a non-zero chance that you stumble into him in pretty much any multiplayer game that has SEA or OCE servers. He’s pretty good at anything unless it’s a fighting game, in which case you’d probably body him.
