It seems a bunch of other platforms apart from Steam were hit as well.

Just several hours ago, Steam has yet again experienced a major outage which prevented most users from using its service. Fortunately, the platform seems to be going back to normal, with most of its functionalities working as intended.

While this incident can be brushed off as a typical server downtime issue, the fact that it also affected several platforms seems too much of a coincidence.

According to some reports surrounding the outage, Steam may have been hit by a potential DDoS attack which also affected several storefronts, including Riot, PlayStation, and Xbox, among others.

Even more interesting is the fact that it didn’t just affect gaming platforms, as services like Microsoft, Google, GitLab, and Lumen were affected as well.

A Look at the Potential DDos Attack

Based on the statistics revealed by DownDetector, both Steam and Epic Games Store experienced connection issues between 1 and 2 PM yesterday and on 1 AM several hours ago.

Several cybersecurity researchers have speculated that such outages were due to a massive DDoS attack orchestrated by Aisuru. However, there’s no confirmation from Steam or Riot about this being the case yet.

In case you’re wondering, Aisuru is a massive botnet network which has been linked to various DDoS attacks just recently.

A report by Cloudflare stated that Aisuru was the culprit behind “hyper-volumetric DDoS attacks twice as large as anything seen on the internet before.”

As of now, there’s no telling if Steam will be targeted by subsequent attacks. As a matter of fact, everything is speculation at this point since we haven’t received any confirmation from Steam yet. Regardless, the timing of the execution is far too coincidental to ignore.

Joe Hixson, the spokesman over at Riot Games, assured their users that their teams have been working hard to fix any network issues that have affected their games in the past few days. To expedite the process, they have decided to disable ranked queues in some regions until the problems are fixed.
