As the sequel to the acclaimed The Outer Worlds, The Outer Worlds 2 aims to improve on its predecessor by implementing changes to the game’s overall system.

However, there’s one specific thing that the previous game doesn’t have but is now present in the upcoming sequel.

This is none other than third-person view.

In an interview with GameInformer, game director Brandon Adler revealed they originally had no plans for a third-person view during the early stages of the game.

We didn’t intend to do third-person when we first started the game,” said Alder in the interview. He revealed that adding a third-person feature on the game is too expensive and that they might consider it on the next one.

However, Obsidian weren’t the ones who ended up doing the third-person themselves. In fact, they have to work with another studio called Disruptive for this sole purpose.

How the Third-Person Camera Came to Be in Outer Worlds 2

This has been a decision that their team came up just around two years ago or so. In case you’re wondering, The Outer Worlds 2 has started development in September 2019.

Hence, it’s only until after 4 years or so that Obsidian decided to finally add in third-person view.

“About halfway through, we were like, ‘I think people are really going to want this,’ so we did an evaluation of how difficult it was going to be to implement it” revealed Adler.

Implementing this feature isn’t simple, as the team had several priorities to cater to. Moreover, they had to fall in line with their current budget as well as their set schedule.

But as development went on, they decided to add the feature as a way of acknowledging and giving thanks to the community.

It is no doubt a thoughtful addition. And, based on what we’ve seen from the trailers and gameplay, The Outer Worlds 2 is shaping up to be the “bigger and better” version of its predecessor.

Obsidian seeks to build and expand upon the things that made the first Outer Worlds game great, all while implementing some nice changes and new additions.

And its third-person feature is something that required certain resources, which is why they resorted to having another studio work on it.

At this point, there have been lots of gameplay videos and trailers about the game already. Fans were excited to see how the game has improved on its prequel. However, some were a bit skeptical due to the previous game’s shortcomings.

How things will go, and how seamless the third-person view will be are still things we’re yet to uncover when the game releases.

The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to release this October 29, 2025 on PC, Xbox, and PS5.
