It’s now all but confirmed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is heading to Nintendo Switch 2, and it’s coming sooner than expected. A new leak claims that Ubisoft will release its open-world adventure Assassin’s Creed Shadows on December 5, 2025, for around $60 according to Dealabs, a French publication.

Ubisoft hasn’t officially announced this version yet, but multiple reports suggest the studio will do so in the coming weeks.

French Retailer Listing Confirms the Port

Rumors about Assassin’s Creed Shadows coming to Switch 2 have been circulating since April. The biggest clue, however, came from a French retailer, Auchan. It briefly published the game’s official box art along with confirmation that the Switch 2 edition will be a Game-Key Card release.

That means the physical version won’t include the full game on a cartridge. Instead, players will receive a download code inside the box, a growing trend that continues to spark debate among fans.

A Divisive Format for Physical Fans

Game-Key Cards have become increasingly common for major releases on Nintendo platforms. For some players, it’s a convenient hybrid between digital and physical ownership. Others argue that buying a boxed copy makes no sense when players still need to download the game to play.

Nintendo recently surveyed its users to gather opinions about digital and physical game formats on the Switch 2, and developers have started to explain why this approach is gaining traction.

According to a Ubisoft developer, data speeds are one of the main reasons for using Game-Key Cards. It’s because the Switch 2’s internal memory can load data faster than its physical cartridges. Similarly, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi has stated that the method can improve performance and stability.

A Major Ubisoft Title Coming to Switch 2

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which originally launched earlier this year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, earned strong reviews across the board, including an 8/10 from IGN. Set in Feudal Japan, the game lets players embody both a samurai and a shinobi, each offering unique combat styles and stealth gameplay.

The Switch 2 version takes advantage of the console’s improved hardware to deliver smoother performance and faster loading times, bringing Ubisoft’s open-world experience to a portable format for the first time.

Release Date and Preorders

According to the latest information, Assassin’s Creed Shadows for Nintendo Switch 2 will release on December 5, 2025. Retailers plan to open preorders in early November, pricing the game at around $60.

If true, this would make Assassin’s Creed Shadows one of the biggest third-party launches for the Switch 2! And it would give Nintendo players the chance to dive into one of Ubisoft’s most ambitious Assassin’s Creed adventures yet.
