It looks like a new Age of Empires title is in the works at World’s Edge, the studio behind the franchise. According to a recent job listing spotted on Microsoft’s career page, the team is seeking both a Senior Unreal Engineer and a Principal Unreal Engineer to work on upcoming Age of Empires projects.
Unreal Engine Enters the Battlefield
The listings describe Xbox Game Studios as “continuing the great legacy of Age of Empires” and looking for engineers with extensive experience in Unreal Engine game development. Applicants are expected to have strong knowledge of systems such as Blueprints, Gameplay Ability System, StateTree, and Mass Entity, as well as experience shipping Unreal titles across multiple platforms.

This is a notable shift for the series, which has historically used proprietary or in-house technology. The move to Unreal Engine could suggest that Microsoft is preparing to modernize the franchise’s visuals and underlying tech for future titles.
Not Necessarily Age of Empires 5, But Something Big
While many fans immediately assumed this points to Age of Empires 5, nothing in the listings explicitly confirms that.
It could be:
- A full sequel,
- A remake or remaster of a previous entry,
- Or even a spin-off project exploring a new style of RTS gameplay.
Whatever the case, the involvement of Unreal Engine hints at a major evolution in the series’ technology.
Could the Series Return to Ancient Times?
While there are no details about the setting, fans have long requested a return to the ancient and early medieval eras, which were the focus of the earliest games. With 2027 marking the 30th anniversary of the original game, it would be a fitting time to revisit the period that started it all.

A Promising Future for the RTS Classic
Whether it’s a brand-new entry, a remake, or something experimental, the move to Unreal Engine shows Microsoft’s commitment to keeping the Age of Empires legacy alive and evolving.
If World’s Edge can combine the franchise’s classic strategy roots with modern technology, we could be entering a new golden age for RTS fans.
