Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has a lot of complex or just straight up annoying mechanics due to its somewhat “realistic” approach to everything, which makes certain skills tough to practice and level up. Thievery is an example of this, as picking locks and pockets can be pretty complicated at first. With that in mind, is there a level requirement for handling locks in the game? Let us find out!
Lockpicking Chests Thievery Level Chart
Long story short, there really is no strict requirement to tackling locks in the game. If you really wanted to, you could try opening a “very hard” lock with a low level, but you very likely will not succeed because Henry’s hands will wobble so hard that he may as well be drunk.
In general, you might want to reach certain levels first before trying higher difficulty locks. Nobody knows for sure what the exact levels needed are, especially since your mileage will still vary depending on a few factors we will talk about later.
With that in mind, locks do become easier as your thievery skill goes up and you unlock various perks. Here are some suggestions you can try based on various players’ experiences with the system:
LOCK LEVEL
RECOMMENDED THIEVERY LEVEL
Very Easy
You can do this at any level, obviously.
Easy
You can also do this at any level, but practice a bit first.
Medium
Atleastlevel 10 for more consistency.
Hard
Around level 15 makes it easy.
Very Hard
Around level 15 to make it doable, 20+ to make it much easier.
Why Is Picking Locks Hard?
Now, the issue comes with the fact that the minigame itself can be difficult depending on what control scheme you are using. If you are on mouse & keyboard, it can be insanely easy and you can probably take on “Very Hard”locks earlier than you would expect.
On the flip side, players using a controller will likely have a much harder time dealing with the sweet spot mechanic to the point where overleveling your thievery skill is the only way to get past most locks. Again, your mileage may vary because personal skill plays a part in it too.
If you are too low level for the lock, Henry occasionally remarks that it is impossible, and the game gives you a notification that you are not skilled enough for it. However, this is just a guideline, since you can still unlock stuff in spite of these warnings.
One thing you can do to compensate for a lack of skill levels or your control scheme’s inconsistency is by getting certain thievery perks and potions. Quickfinger potions will temporarily increase your level by a lot, while perks like Tool Master can slightly improve your chances of success.
Also, consider training at the miller’s chest. In the area southwest of Semine, you can find Miller Kreyzel in the aptly named Lower Semine Mill. He will let you train your lockpicking skill on a chest that will keep on resetting after you open it.
Just note that around level 9 or 10 thievery, Henry will stop gaining experience from this training chest. He will also straight up tell you that you cannot learn anything else from opening it. Grinding this way will help you trivialize medium locks in no time.
With all of that in mind, the takeaway here should be that you need to level up your thievery regularly if you plan on taking on harder locks. It should be noted that most “Very Hard” locks will typically have a key that unlocks it.
Just pay attention to your surroundings, or in the case of quests, dialogue from other NPCs. For example, a certain quest features a “Very Hard” lock that an NPC straight up tells you will have a key found in a specific area.
If you plan on training your skill through breaking into chests and doors, make sure to stock up on a lot of lockpicks in case you keep breaking them. Check out our guide on where to buy lockpicks for more information, especially if you are just starting out.
