Of course, being a guild full of criminals means that they aren’t exactly easy to join. You can’t just walk up to the leader and ask to join. They have to lay low and avoid the law, after all!
In this guide, we’ll tell you how to discover the Thieves Guild and how to complete the initiation.
How To Join The Thieves Guild | The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
To join the Thieves Guild, you must first hear word of the guild and its leader. There are multiple ways to do this, such as meeting City-Swimmer or being jailed after having a bounty on you. However, the easiest way is to just go to the Imperial City Waterfront, marked above.
Once you get there, look for a wanted poster for The Gray Fox. Interact with it and it will be added as one of your dialogue options with citizens.
Now, this step is somewhat optional but recommended. After reading the wanted poster, look for any beggars and talk with them. Beggars wander all over the Imperial City, and they are quite common in the Waterfront.
Ask the beggar about The Gray Fox and they will merely say it’s just a legend. Persuade the beggar until you raise their Disposition to 80 or more. Then, ask about The Gray Fox again and say that you want to work with him. You’ll now be told to go to the Garden of Dareloth at midnight. They sure changed their tune, huh?
Meeting with the Thieves
As the beggar mentioned, go to the Garden of Dareloth on the Imperial City Waterfront. Its rough location is marked on the map above. Wait there until midnight, though it’s somewhat ideal to come early at around 11 PM.
We recommend making a save at this point, just in case. Also, make sure to bring a few lockpicks. You’ll need them! Plus, it’s a good idea to use our guide on lockpicking to brush up on how it works.
Once it’s past midnight, a few NPCs will walk up to the Garden of Dareloth. The main one you need to talk to is Armand Christophe. Persuade him until his Disposition is at 50 or more. Then, talk to him about Gray Fox and choose the “Join the Thieves Guild” option. If the other NPCs are still missing, he’ll just tell you to wait.
When everyone is at the Garden of Dareloth and you choose “Join the Thieves Guild”, Armand Christophe will start an initiation test. This will start the “May the Best Thief Win” quest, which is a competition.
The Test
To win the test, you have to race over to Amantius Allectus’ house in the Imperial City’s Temple District. You can ask the beggars for the location, but you have limited time. To help you, we’ve marked it on the map above for you. Note that you’ll need to pick the door to enter the house.
Once you enter the house, check the desk in front of the northern wall. It will be to your right as you enter the house.
Interact with the desk and loot Amantius Allectus’ Diary from it. If you were fast enough, you’d be the first thief to get it, completing the test! You now just need to return to the Garden of Dareloth at midnight to meet Armand Christophe again. Give him the diary and you’ll officially join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered.
What to Do if Methredhel Got the Diary
If you are too slow, Methredhel will steal the diary first. You’ll get a quest update message if this happens. She’s extremely fast, so it’s not uncommon for that to happen! Don’t despair, though, you can still make a comeback. You just need to steal the diary back from Methredhel.
There are two ways to go about this. The first is to simply find Methredel and pickpocket her. She’ll be carrying the diary with her still, if she’s still wandering around Amantius Allectus’ house.
The second is to wait for Methredhel to go back to her house, which we’ve marked on the spot above. She’ll put Amantius’ diary inside a chest and then go to sleep. You can just break into her house and steal the diary for yourself, voiding her win. You snooze, you lose!
Alternatively, you can just let Methredhel turn in the diary. In this case, just meet Armand Christophe again (same place, same time) and he’ll offer a quest to steal a sword from A Fighting Chance. This quest is untimed and can be done at your leisure, giving you an easier second chance to enter the Thieves Guild.
So, there you have it, that’s everything you need to do to be able to join the “illustrious” Thieves Guild in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered!
Gamer cursed by being interested by most games, resulting in a ridiculous backlog he’ll never be able to conquer. Been gaming for over two decades now!
